Teach Yourself Family History

Welcome to my website, my name is Linda Elliott and I am a family historian with over 40 years of experience. History, particularly Family History is my passion. I have worked in libraries & archives, taught family history as extra mural courses, seminars and workshops. I am a professional family history researcher, my area of expertise is English genealogy.

It seemed a shame to have all this knowledge & experience and not share it with others, so this website was born. I hope you enjoy these lessons, I shall be adding to them regularly taking you from a novice researcher to an expert family historian.

To start off learning how to trace your family history I recommend that you work through the lessons under the “Getting Started” tab at the top of this page. These lessons should help you trace your family back to at least to the early 1800’s.

1. Tracing Your Family History

2. Civil Registration

3. Census

4. Parish Registers

5. Wills post 1858

6. Magazine, Books & DVD’s

Once your have completed all five beginner lessons then simply chose the lesson on whichever subject you need to know more about. Some people might find they have military ancestors and others have folk who travelled abroad, whatever they did you will need to know what records are available so that you can find out more about their lives. These lessons have been divided under the “Taking It Further”, “What Did They Do?” and “Where Did They Live?” tabs. Click on the tab to see what is there. I will be adding to these lessons constantly.

Lastly there is the “Records By County” tab, it can be rather time consuming and difficult to find out which records are available online for which county and where on the internet  they are. This tab will always be a work in progress as new records are coming online almost daily. So watch this section for when your counties come up and then you’ll be able to keep up to date with what is available.

Have fun !
